Mirissa, is a beautiful fishing town that lies on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. It rose to fame as one of the leading cetacean sighting locations in the world, following research and work published by many eminent marine biologists. The best period for migratory marine mammal watching in Mirissa is December to April, when hundreds of blue, sperm, fin, killer and bryde’s whales and spinner dolphins pass within a few kilometres of the coast.
Leave for Mirissa after breakfast. You will be met by the boat crew at the harbour.
Proceed on a whale watching boat tour to the deep ocean. The leisurely paced boat ride will take you to the vicinity of the fascinating marine giants, the whales. You will also see pods of dolphins vying for your attention, almost as if to distract you from the whales. Watching these gentle and beautiful marine creatures will no doubt be a truly memorable experience. Have a snack lunch while onboard the boat (optional).
The cruise can be extended till evening if you wish to observe the setting sun with its explosion of purple and magenta hues strewn across the far horizon.
Visitors who wish to stay overnight on the boat can have a sea bath before settling down to dinner.
Proceed to Kalametiya Fishing Port in the early hours of the morning. Visit Ussangoda National Park. Thereafter, return to your base hotel.
