Fringed by the majestic highlands on its northern boundary, the Udawalawe National Park is undoubtedly one of the world’s best places to see large herds of Asian elephants roaming in the wild. Apart from having a high density of these gentle giants, Udawalawe is also home to many types of monkeys, deer, sloth bears, a colourful myriad of birds and the occasional leopard.
The Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home is located at the southern end of the park. This centre serves as a temporary refuge and home for orphaned or ill elephant calves. Following nurtured care and rehabilitation, the elephant calves are released back into the wild to fend for themselves. It is a delightful experience to watch the young elephants drinking milk and eating tasty fruit morsels at feeding time.
